Job description
The department of Estuarine & Delta Systems (EDS - location Yerseke) of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (Royal NIOZ) is looking for a highly motivated research assistant Digital Data for handling (geo)data, computer programming and visualization.
THE INSTITUTE
NIOZ is the national oceanographic institute of the Netherlands and center of expertise for oceans, seas, and deltas. NIOZ advances fundamental understanding of marine systems, the way they change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they may provide sustainable solutions to society in the future. In addition to its research and education, NIOZ supports marine policy development.
THE DEPARTMENT
The department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS) of NIOZ is based in Yerseke. We study how these coasts are shaped, both by natural processes and by human influence, and aim to understand the complex functioning of these systems and their value for society. We do this by measurements in the field and laboratory, remote sensing and modelling.
THE POSITION
As research assistant Digital data, you will be:
- Developing workflows for handling geo-data and geo-information
- Providing support with programming codes (e.g., for maps, models and computer graphics) and maintaining a code library
- Bringing together digital techniques used in the EDS department.
Job requirements
THE CANDIDATE
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a HBO/bachelor degree in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), programming, visualisation or similar, preferably with one or more of the following skills:
- You have experience with coding languages such as for example Python, R, C++, Fortran, preferably with expertise in parallel computing, and you are able to organize, manage and communicate code libraries
- You have experience with geo-data processing
- You have experience with computer visualisation techniques.
In addition,
- You would like to learn new digital techniques and work out solutions
- You have a collaborative attitude
- You have good communication skills (oral and written in English).

CONDITIONS
- Employment of this position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO-I, for in principle 24 hours a week, for a duration of 1 year with prospects of a permanent position.
- Salary compliant with CAO-WVOI (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes) scale 8 or 9 depending on relevant experience.

- 338 annualized holiday hours for a full-time 40-hour work week.
- Pension scheme via ABP, 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.33%.
