Job description

The department Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS) of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), is recruiting a chemical analyst (max. 0.75 FTE).


THE INSTITUTE
NIOZ is the national oceanographic institute of the Netherlands. Its principal mission is to perform academically excellent, multidisciplinary, fundamental and frontier-applied marine research and education addressing important scientific and societal questions pertaining to the functioning of oceans, seas and deltas. NIOZ advances fundamental understanding of marine systems, the way they change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they may provide sustainable solutions to society in the future. NIOZ serves as national marine research facilitator for the scientific community in the Netherlands. In addition to its research and education, NIOZ supports marine-policy development within the national and international context.


THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS, NIOZ-Yerseke) studies how the interplay between biota, hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and biochemistry shapes the estuarine, deltaic and coastal environments within the context of natural and human-induced environmental changes. Our department assigns central importance to a multidisciplinary approach that combines state-of-the-art biophysical, biochemical, ecological and physiological measurements and experiments with remote sensing and numerical modelling to create in-depth understanding of the processes that control estuarine and delta systems. One important focus for the department is how our research can create value for society.


THE VACANCY
As a chemical analyst you will be first contact and/or responsible for, among others:

  • Analyzing samples and data reporting in a timely and precise manner.
  • Method development, validation and adjustment of analytical operating procedures .
  • Familiarizing users (mainly PhD students, Postdocs, MSc students and interns) with equipment and teaching them the different analytical methods
  • Keeping the lab operational and providing general support

Job requirements

THE CANDIDATE
For this challenging position as chemical analyst, we are looking for enthusiastic and collegial candidates with:

  • A completed HBO education in analytical chemistry
  • Affinity, and preferably experience with techniques like Spectrometry, ICP, HPLC-DAD, FTIR etc.
  • Ability to work with precision, to develop methods, use analytic software and be skilled in data processing and archiving
  • Interest in marine sciences and international working environment
  • Resourcefulness and self-reliance with solving technical issues
  • Flexible attitude towards planning of task, willingness to implement new techniques together with researchers and pro-active position regarding feedback of results
  • Good communication skills in both English and Dutch (oral and written)

CONDITIONS

  • Employment of this part-time position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO-I, for a duration of 1 year, for 30 hours a week with prospects of a permanent position.
  • Salary compliant with CAO-WVOI  (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes) scale 8 or 9 depending on relevant experience.

  • 338 annualized holiday hours for a full-time 40-hour work week.
  • Pension scheme via ABP, 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.33%.
